In Jesus's time christmas was the true meaning as it was full of mass's, gatherings and family feasts/dinner.
In the 1700's christmas was more about giving presents to each other more than it was celebrating. On the better side though the children did not expect to get a present this bring the true meaning of christmas back because christmas was not just about gifts.
Today Christmas's "True Meaning" is being used as a marketing ploy for money. Praying is no longer a part in the christmas celebration. Children wake up thinking "Yay! It's Christmas, time for presents" instead of "Yay! It's Christmas, time for prayer and family time at the church!"
